Healthy back is a very personal topic for me. Chronic back pain brought me to my first yoga class years ago. It felt like a last resort I could turn to once the conventional medicine advised painkillers and potential back surgery in future. I’m so glad I did not listen. I did not give up on my body and instead, looked for other ways to heal my back situation. It turned out to be a very humbling and life changing experience.
I hope that the majority of you don’t have to go through not being able to walk or work due to back pain or anything more dramatic like mentioned earlier spine surgery. But, unfortunately, the reality is that millions of people around the world regularly complain or will in future, of some kind of back pain, sometimes chronic, sometimes just a niggle here and there. This is due to many factors, our lifestyle, lack of healthy movement, stress, diet etc.
The biggest problem is that many people are confused and even misled about how to keep their spine safe… strengthen your core, sit with your back straight, bend your knees when you fold, we hear these often and yet, still our back hurts. The truth is that our spine is designed to move in a million different ways, the truth is also that our back muscles are often very tight and tired from the lack of that movement. In order to keep our back safe and healthy we need to learn what it currently needs the most and how to move it safely.
In this course…
I will take you through some gentle spinal movements, we will explore the most common sources of pain, how we can release tension using the breath, the support of the mat, help of the gravity and some myofascial release. You do not need any experience in yoga, this course is open to anybody, there will be no dynamic movements or advanced shapes. This course is focusing entirely on the health of our back, lower back, middle back, upper back and the neck.
Who is it good for?
Literally for everyone, anyone experiencing some kind of back pain, discomfort in the neck, chest, shoulders or lower back area, anyone sitting or standing for long hours or lifting things, anyone with tight or weak back muscles, anyone with SI joint or discs problem or holding tension in the back in stressful situations and let’s face it, who doesn’t.
We will be meeting for 1 hour sessions once a week, focusing on one area of the back at a time. You will also receive access to videos helping you to integrate that information and practise at home. My hope is that with a combination of in-person and pre-recorded material you’ll have tools to help your back feel better, no matter how busy you feel.
